10/18/19

I learned about this little gem while at TwitchCon 2019 and after waiting in line for nearly an hour and thirty minutes to play the demo.

I'm here for the long run with MISTOVER.

MISTOVER published and developed by Krafton Inc. or also known as Krafton Union MISTOVER is a new take on a dungeon-crawling RPG with cute and uniquely drawn characters. There are eight different characters that you can play with different skills, etc.
Normally I prefer not to compare games to one another but if you have played the game Darkest Dungeon there are some aspects that MISTOVER adopts.

I will admit that I did not know much about the developer until I did a bit of research - Krafton Union /Krafton Inc.

Krafton Game Union seems to be a South Korean based company but reaching out to around the
world with games that appeal to all gamers + children. Most of the company's games are PC or mobile-based and their most notable games that is more widely known - PlayerUnknow's Battlegrounds aka PUBG - a Battle Royale and another (perhaps) notable game Tera -MMORPG.

I've always wanted to play Tera but never had a computer strong enough to support the needs of the game but that is something that I am working on.

 Now about MISTOVER the game,
The unexpected appearance of the Vortex, Pillar of Despair, unleashed dreadful creatures that brutally raided the world. Defenseless and vulnerable, mankind was soon on the verge of extinction.

When all hope was lost, a miracle happened and the creatures suddenly vanished. Desperate to prevent the next invasion, the survivors created a group called the 'Corps' that journeys into the Vortex from whence the creatures emerged. You will lead the Corps to reveal the secrets behind the incidents.

Will the human race succeed in changing the course of their destiny? - Steam

An example of your standard battle

To begin the game you start off in an undisclosed location in a forest with no memory of how you got there and soon you are attacked by the monstrous inhabitants of the forest that leads into your basic battle tutorial.

After your first battle, the story begins are you are rescued by a local village expedition corps and you discover that you are in the Misty Forest and you are considered a "Lost One" those who are tainted by the mist and in short lose your memories or succumb to the creatures that have been corrupted/distorted by the mist.

An example of how bad the vortex can get
You are then whisked off to see the Duke of the village and meet the inhabitants the first thing you will notice about the village is that there is a large tornado or vortex in the background. The tornado or vortex is an important piece to the story and you will come to understand the meaning behind it as you speak to the Duke and eventually join the Expedition Corps to stop the world from being consumed by this tornado.

After joining the Expedition Corps you are sent off on various quests for story purposes and also for the town's folk to learn about them and their history and their quirks.

As you accept various quests, you will quickly learn that you need supplies in order to venture though the dungeons - you need light in order to see where you are going and prevent surprise attacks from monsters AND you also require food to make sure that your crew will not starve during your adventure through the dungeon.

I hope you're good at money management!

Now there are about five designs of dungeons but items are scattered across the map and you need to find these in order to prevent the Doomsday Clock from progressing. Ah, yes I forgot to mention the Doomsday Clock, the Doomsday clock will either progress or regress depending on the success of your mission and how many of the "Glowing Dandelions" you light, how much debris you remove and finally how many chests you open. Thus the game is making you pick up things you may usually forego if it were not important...right?

I would normally forego these things but not this time! YIKES!

So in a quick summary of MISTOVER:
  • You have to do a lot of quests
  • You have to look at everything & pick up everything
  • You need light & food otherwise you die
  • E V E R Y T H I N G you do affect the Doomsday clock
  • Your crew formation is important
  • GOLD IS IMPORTANT
  • Everything is important...
There are so many more interesting features in MISTOVER that I want to talk about but I will hold back because I want you all to experience the game itself.

Now for the review~

Rating Guide:
☆: Could be better
☆: Ok
☆: Decent
: Great!

Story:
The story is pretty straight forward, you are given tasks to do and you must complete them in order to progress the story while keeping an eye on the Doomsday Clock. Although I do hate being timed or anything that affects time and results in severe consequences in games.

Art/Graphics:
I LOVE THE ART STYLE, it is honestly one the main reasons why MISTOVER has held my attention for such a long time whereas Darkest Dungeon did not. It definitely has the cute and spooky features as well as uniquely designed landscapes, characters, creatures and more.

Dark, Spooky, and Cute

Gameplay:
The fact that MISTOVER brings a new look to the dungeon crawler but in a different way by using a "large square" as the dungeon, using a 3x3 square as the battlefield and able to move around crew members as you see fit.  The game is easy to pick up and play but it all comes down to planning, planning is important you know to make sure you have enough supplies to make it through the dungeon.

All in all, I am in the long haul with MISTOVER, since its release I have put in about 12 hours while working and streaming other games. Most of the time I've played has been off stream as I continue to familiarize myself with the game and the updates.

I highly recommend giving this game a try, especially if you're looking to try a new type of dungeon crawler.

I am fairly new to dungeon crawlers, I tend to lose interest quickly or get distracted by something else. But tell me--

  • What is your favorite type of dungeon crawler?
  • What caught you interest to that specific game
  • Why dungeon crawlers?
